Arthur F. Schulz Jr. Scholarship

Schulz Scholarship Application Form

A leader of Principia for nearly 30 years, Art Schulz embodied many talents and filled numerous positions. As a much-loved Middle School housepop, football and baseball coach, assistant dean and dean of boys, headmaster, vice-president, and president, Art had an uncanny perceptiveness. He inspired confidence in the people with whom he worked. As a speaker with fresh and practical ideas, he won our hearts with his illustrations of Christian living that sometimes brought peals of laughter and ended in quiet, serious thinking. This tribute to Art supports his vision of Principia as unique in the field of education.

In 1982 the Principia Alumni Association established a special endowment fund in Art’s memory. With income from this fund, $3,000 scholarships are awarded each year to incoming Upper School freshmen who are children or grandchildren of members of the Alumni Association and have a minimum GPA of 3.5. These scholarships are for one year and based solely upon merit.

Eligibility:

  • Students entering their freshman year at Principia Upper School who have either a parent or a grandparent who is or was a member of The Principia Alumni Association.
  • Cumulative 7th- and 8th-grade GPA of 3.5, based upon a 4-point scale (A = 4.0)
  • High academic promise
  • Active involvement in Christian Science Sunday School, church activities, and other Christian Science-related activities
  • Outstanding citizenship
  • Leadership participation in extracurricular activities

How to apply:

  • Complete the application form and essay.
  • Return to the Admissions Office by April 15 (see end of application for address).
  • Reminder, all applicants for this award must be accepted by the Upper School Admissions Committee before the scholarship will be awarded.

How scholarships are awarded:

Only students who actually enroll in the Upper School may be awarded the Arthur F. Schulz Jr. Scholarship. The funds will be applied to the recipient’s account at the beginning of the school year of the student’s freshman year. Each recipient’s citizenship and academic record may be re-considered during the school year in the event that scholarship eligibility becomes an issue.

Essay:

In 500-750 words share why you should be considered for the Arthur F. Schulz Jr. Scholarship. Include information about your academic promise, your commitment to Christian Science (including membership in The Mother Church, a branch church, any participation in branch church activities, or how you used your commitment to Christian Science at a Christian Science camp), examples of your leadership in school, and any other extracurricular activities.

Applications will not be evaluated until both the application form and the essay have been submitted. The essay should be e-mailed to schoolfinaid@principia.edu.
