BioBlitz 2024: May 3 & 4

Citizen-science and fun—a perfect combination! Join us for BioBlitz 2024, a community celebration and scientific survey of the plants and animals that live on the Principia School campus. Explore and discover alongside scientists from the Saint Louis Zoo, Missouri Botanical Garden, and Missouri Department of Conservation. Enjoy s’mores and stargazing on Friday night and donuts, painting, and STEM activities on Saturday morning. Registration is required.

No experience necessary, and adventurers of all ages are welcome. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes that you can explore and get dirty in.

Schedule of Activities

FRIDAY, MAY 3

8 a.m.–3 p.m.—This time is reserved for school groups.
Principia BioBlitz kicks-off with students from Principia and area schools collecting data and making discoveries across the Principia campus.

3:30–5 p.m.—All are invited.
The community is invited to join us for snacks and exploration, turtle tracking, and hayrides.

7–10 p.m.—All are invited.
Enjoy s’mores and stargazing, bat netting, and insect discovery.

SATURDAY, MAY 4

6:30–9 a.m.—All are invited.
Start the day with birding followed by donuts, juice, and coffee.

9 a.m.–Noon—All are invited.
Scientific surveying, STEM activities, plant sale, honeysuckle table-making, and plein-air painting for all ages/experiences. Artists are invited to set up easels anywhere on campus, which includes 300+ acres of oak-hickory forest, prairie, ponds, and creek beds. Please bring your own drawing or painting supplies. From 8:30–11:30 a.m., there will be an optional honeysuckle table-making activity. Twelve spots are available comprised of six groups of two (one adult per group is required). If you wish to participate in this activity, please indicate when registering for BioBlitz.
