Overview

You are here

At Principia Lower School, active learning and doing are daily fare. Students from preschool through fifth grade explore new ideas and develop strong foundational skills. We provide multiple opportunities for hands-on learning, where students develop their abilities with help from not only from classroom teachers but from each other.

Preschool

This community of three- and four-year-olds engages in creative play, music, language development, problem solving, and job responsibilities, as well as outdoor activity and nature discovery. Frequent field trips expand the children’s horizons from home to school to community, and weekly story time in the library instills an early love of reading.

Kindergarten–Grade 5

Each class is overseen by a classroom teacher, providing individual attention as well as flexible and varied grouping of learners by task, interest, and ability. Each school day includes the “core” subjects of language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies. And each week offers plenty of opportunity to integrate music, art, physical education, technology, and co-curricular activities in ways that are relevant and that enrich understanding.

All students share a well-stocked, inviting library; a bright, fully equipped art room; and a music room, dining room, and gym. A large playground, with natural play spaces as well as traditional equipment areas and two fields, provides plenty of scope for outdoor play and learning. And we regularly use other parts of our 360-acre campus of rolling hills and woodlands for curricular exploration and study.

The range of activities and expectations at Principia Lower School provide plenty of opportunity for young learners to practice selflessness, self-reliance, and self-control. Our priority is that our students learn how to learn, how to think, and how to act selflessly. We encourage and challenge them to grow intellectually, socially, physically, morally, and spiritually by applying the principles of Christian Science in daily activity.

Experiential Learning

There’s nothing quite like firsthand experience to help grasp and strengthen knowledge. Through a variety of in-class, out-of-class, and off-campus opportunities, students regularly explore and engage with art, science, history, and culture.

Moved to Move

Transitioning to a new school, a new job, a new life many miles away can seem daunting. But when Principia is right for your family, the process often unfolds in wonderful and unexpected ways. Meet four families who made the move.
