Science

The Middle School science program is designed to instill a sense of wonder in all students, while exposing them to a variety of disciplines to develop a strong curiosity and sense of excitement about the natural world around them. Classes include a variety of activities that foster students’ creative problem solving and critical thinking skills, including lab reports, individual and group research projects, tests, quizzes, oral presentations, field work, and field trips.

Sixth grade science curriculum includes international standards of measurement, light, sound, ecosystems, and the relationship of science and technology. Seventh grade students explore environmental issues, astronomy, and geology. Eighth graders tackle more advanced subjects including meteorology, energy, forces, chemistry, and atomic structure. All class levels are introduced to various scientific theories, and trained to discern the difference between fact and theory.

All levels team up with Middle School math classes for AppDays, and students also take part in monthly wonder days where numerous scientific topics are explored. In the spring, students demonstrate knowledge of the scientific method by designing, implementing, and presenting a science experiment and their findings to classmates.

Also in the spring, sixth graders spend their trip week on a 5-day science-oriented trip to the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and Hoover Dam. There they experience hands-on lessons and learning in science and natural history, surrounded by some of the most spectacular scenery imaginable.

“I love science wonder days. We learn the most interesting things just by letting one question lead to the next question, and to the next question . . .”
