Middle School students create works of art that help lead to self-awareness and challenge limitations. They explore the meaning and role of inspiration in art, and participate in the discussion and evaluation of their work through group critiques and reflective writing. Middle School students readily connect art with the world outside the art room, and love to explore art through cultural and historical perspectives. Students learn to use a variety of art materials, and effectively apply principles of design to their works.
Sixth graders concentrate on perspective drawing, printmaking, ceramics, painting, and collage. Emphasis is placed on respect for artwork and the proper care, use, and maintenance of art supplies.
In seventh grade, students focus on realistic drawing, stylized drawing, mixed media, and other topics of study. More attention is given to self-evaluation and reflection.
By eighth grade, students’ work concentrates on drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and research. Meaning and content becomes more of a focus. Students are now beginning to develop their personal directions in art, as well as refining their skills.
