English

Clear, Intelligent, and Creative Expression

Read critically, think creatively, write and speak effectively—and move to a deeper understanding of literature. These are the objectives of our English Department.

Through close reading, meaningful discussion, and clear writing about great literature, students learn to detect nuances of style and composition, analyze important works within the context of their genre and historical setting, and strengthen their writing skills.

Students with a particular passion for literature are invited to apply for honors and Advanced Placement courses. The honors curriculum, available for all four years, shares core reading lists with regular classes. Additional titles, together with more frequent and challenging writing assignments, create an enriching course of study.

Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition (Junior year) and Advanced Placement English Language and Composition (Senior year) are available for students interested in college-level class options in literary analysis and expository writing.

Through all our courses, we challenge our students to find their own voice and thus, express the individuality of their true, spiritual selfhood.
