Cultivating Critical and Ethical Thinking
The importance and relevance of the sciences in modern life cannot be overestimated. Young people who are trained to understand and respect nature, think and reason scientifically, and search diligently for solutions to complex problems mature into responsible citizens and leading thinkers in every field.
All Upper School students take physics, chemistry, and biology. We recommend a fourth year of study for those with a strong interest or aptitude in science, as well as those considering a career in the sciences or engineering. Chemistry and biology students can elect to take a contract honors option, which offers additional credit for completing an in-depth, individual study and/or additional labs. AP chemistry is also available. Several challenging science electives are offered such as marine biology and ecology and the environment.
An exciting, interdisciplinary course, Ecology of Belize, is offered during a 12-day trip to Central America. Students study ancient Mayan ruins, rain forest ecology, and marine biology, while staying part of the time on a remote mangrove island, making daily dives on Belize’s barrier reef and completing a scientific research study.
It’s important to note, as Christian Scientists, we focus on a positive, solution-based approach to environmental challenges and support our students in becoming ethical, as well as scientific thinkers with a diverse worldview.
