Visual Arts
Creativity, relevance, personal interpretation, and aesthetics are emphasized at all levels of the visual arts experience at Principia.
In the Lower and Middle School, art is fully integrated into the academic program. While applying their creative skills to topics across the curriculum—in science or social studies, for example—students in the younger grades learn the basics of line, color, and perspective. They also experiment with multi-media work.
In the Upper School, cross-disciplinary projects offer many opportunities to incorporate art, and we offer a vast array of courses in 2D, 3D, digital, video art for the dedicated artist. The social role and relevance of art runs through many of the studio art classes (in the Interactive Mural Workshop and Socially Engaged Art courses, for instance) as well as through the media and videography classes.
