From all corners of the world, these courageous students bring with them not only diverse perspectives, customs, and cultures but also a deep spiritual connection to our shared Christian Science values. Their contributions are invaluable, helping to create the rich, global community that defines Principia today.
However, for many of our international students, the cost of traveling home can be a significant challenge. Hailing from distant countries like France, Ukraine, Ghana, and Kenya, students often face financial barriers that make returning home—whether for the holidays or summer—impossible.
To address this, the Upper School Class of 1958 established the International Student Travel Fund, born from their compassion and desire to support their fellow Principians. The fund ensures international students have the opportunity to reconnect with their families and home cultures at least once a year.
Michelle Bland (C’98), International Student Program Director at Principia School, explains, “This travel fund is not just about financial support—it’s about giving our international students the agency to nurture their roots, rejuvenate their spirits, and return to campus with a renewed sense of purpose and pride. By reconnecting with their families and cultural traditions, these students return to Principia empowered to continue contributing as ambassadors of their countries, strengthening our global community, and sharing the wealth of their experiences with their peers.”
One such student is senior, Natalie, from Kenya, who said, “This is a great opportunity to go back home and connect with my family after three years away from home. Home is more than just a physical place or building; it is a sense of belonging and love. Being away from Kenya did not separate me from the sense of home and the idea that I am loved and cared for, because Principia has created this sense of home.”
Another senior, Michael, said, “Returning home to Ghana to see my family reminds me of my roots and the love that grounds me. It’s a time to reconnect, share stories, and create lasting memories. Since I haven't seen my family in eight years, this is a wonderful opportunity that I deeply appreciate.”
The International Student Travel Fund embodies Principia’s deep commitment to its global community and reinforces the School’s dedication to creating a family that spans the world. This support is not only a blessing to the students but also enriches the entire Principia community, where global perspectives, traditions, and values strengthen the School’s vibrant, interconnected family.
