Fresh off last year’s state championship, Principia boys basketball is once again making headlines, earning the number one preseason ranking in Missouri by Sports Illustrated, surpassing powerhouse programs of much larger schools like Chaminade and De Smet. For Head Coach Jay Blossom, that recognition reflects more than just talent—it’s about the culture his players have built together.
“We have really good players who work really hard—they play for the right reasons—they play for the front of the jersey, and not the back of the jersey,” says Blossom.
And, playing for the front of the jersey—for the team, the school, and Principia community—is no small task in today’s era where individual recognition often overshadows teamwork. But Coach Blossom has taken on this challenge, molding a winning team that models humility, unity, and discipline.
The team’s success has also opened doors to one of the most coveted events for high school basketball in the nation—the prestigious City of Palms Classic in Florida showcasing future college and NBA talent. As the only Missouri team invited, Principia Basketball will not only compete against the best 15 teams in the nation, they will be treated to a seven-day trip to Florida, and a first-class experience including great food and hospitality, to an elite players’ lounge, free daily haircuts, and recruiting services. “It’s recognition for our team. It’s the best of the absolute best. It’s the top reward for our kids who’ve worked so hard,” Blossom said. “They’ll be playing the best of the best and getting incredible exposure, but it’s also a chance to see how first-class programs operate.”
“I think the main ingredient is getting kids to buy in. We call it ‘TTW’—toughest team wins,” said Blossom. “It's being able to take charges, dive on the floor, make the extra pass—little things that maybe don't get your name in the paper or on the box score, but make a big difference in winning and losing in our team culture.” Blossom continues, “We have kids who have bought into that, and embraced it, and that's what makes this team special.”
That culture has produced remarkable results. Principia finished last season with a 31–1 record and a state championship, marking its fourth straight year of elite performance. Now, the team faces a new challenge: staying on top with a target on its back as the team to beat. Blossom remains confident that his players’ maturity and selflessness will carry them through.
For Blossom, success at Principia goes far beyond the court. “We're really fortunate to be at a school that has so many teachers who care so much about students. There's something about Principia that's just different.”
From academic accountability to personal development, Principia’s philosophy of educating the whole student shapes every part of its basketball program. “We talk about playing for our school, our community, and each other,” Blossom said. “It’s not just about winning—it’s about growing as people.”
As Principia Basketball embarks on the upcoming season, players carry that spirit with them: playing tough, playing together, and representing their school with pride.
