Upper Schoolers gave a rousing performance of Matilda the Musical, based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl. On a stage set with colorful letter blocks, students gave wonderful performances full of heart and a dash of rebellion.
The show centers on Matilda Wormwood, played by junior Savannah, a little girl who overcomes challenges with a love of reading and a bit of magic. Her tender-hearted teacher, Miss Honey played by junior Quinna, gives her encouragement throughout while also learning to stand up for herself. The show gave students the opportunity to display exquisite vocal performances and demonstrate their comedic timing, due to the many moments of levity and absurdity woven into the production.
Principia’s production received seven nominations and three wins from the St. Louis High School Musical Theatre Awards, including for Outstanding Scenic Design and Execution, Outstanding Technical Direction, and Outstanding Direction. At the awards ceremony in May, Principia students performed in the opening number, "Another Openin' Another Show" from Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate.. They also performed the stirring Matilda finale of "Revolting Children" as part of a medley of songs from each of the shows nominated for Outstanding Production.
Director Gabe McManus notes that this unique musical gave students an opportunity to master the technical aspects of shows. “One of the highlights was flying actors in the show,” he says. “Special rehearsals were needed for the actors that were flying and the actors involved in ‘throwing’ them, including practicing harnessing them in, and manning the ropes that lifted them. It was truly a team effort and paid off with some incredible scenes in Matilda.”
Congratulations to Principia’s cast, crew, and creative team!
