Theater Arts
Principia School is ranked "#1 best high school for the arts in Missouri" by Niche, a renowned school ranking site.
Through a sequence of Upper School theater classes, students continually build upon various aspects of theater and performance, while overcoming limitations in thought and growing in self-confidence. They delve into the rich history of the art of storytelling through physical expression, voice, movement, and improvisation. Students explore firsthand all aspects of the theater process from writing to directing to acting, giving them a well-rounded experience. They showcase their work in the classroom, the community, and beyond.
Upper School students have a number of opportunities to perform each year from one-act plays and Panther Playfest to Shakespeare productions. Also, each spring the Upper School puts on a musical production that all are welcome to audition for. Some recent shows include Annie, Disney's The Little Mermaid, BIG, and Freaky Friday.
There are also various opportunities at the lower levels to explore the world of theater. Each year the Middle School dedicates a week to putting on a production for the community. Students are responsible for the acting and all the behind-the-scenes work, including backstage management, technology, marketing, costume and set design.
Backstage Opportunities
Interested Upper School students work closely with our auditorium manager to learn the nuts and bolts of set design, sound, and lighting. These students play a key role in every performance held in the 800-seat Ridgway Auditorium.
